Saint David of Gareji was a 6th-century Syrian ascetic and one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers who came to Georgia to spread Christianity. He founded the famous David Gareji monastery complex, a vast rock-hewn religious and cultural center in eastern Georgia near the Azerbaijan border.
