The cloth is a reminder: They stripped off Jesus' clothes and put a scarlet robe on him. (Matth. 27:28). The craftsman is an iconogapher and used a piece of the cloth which he uses for writing Theotokos and Infant Christ icons.

The pieces of wood is a reminder: Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). (John 19:17-42)
